Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), De minnaar (portret van luitenant Milliet), 1888
The lover (portrait of Lieutenant Milliet), oil on canvas, 60 x 49 cm.
Paul-Eugène Milliet was a second lieutenant in a Zouave regiment of the French army at the Caserne Calvin in Arles, the emblem of the regiment being painted in the top right corner. Admired by Van Gogh for his amorous escapades, himself being awkward in his contacts with women, Milliet was his painting and drinking companion. He took drawing lessons from the artist for some time and accompanied him on his painting trips. Milliet’s regiment had just returned from Tonkin, then French Indochina, now part of modern Vietnam, and Milliet was on convalescence in the south of France.
