The motif of a solitary dancer poised in the footlights of a stage remains one of Degas’s most celebrated subjects; this version is his largest and most finely detailed. The powdery effects of the pastel, used for the lighter forms of the dancer’s limbs and costume, contrast with more liquid details from the brushed-on gouache of the stage scenery. The warmth of peach-tinted paper glows through the thinly applied colors, enhancing the effect of illumination.
