Animals in a Landscape, 1914

Franz Marc (1880-1916) oil on canvas at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Written near the painting: In 1915, Franz Marc wrote, "Very early, I found people to be ‘ugly.’ Animals seemed more beautiful, more pure." Here, three oxen are fragmented into a kaleidoscope of colors. Yet the animals are completely integrated into the natural surroundings as well as into the painting itself. Marc considered animals the most fitting symbols of a harmonious state of being.
